Senior Cat Care Tips

July 15 2016

Is your cat entering her golden years? Fluffy will still be as adorable as ever as she ages, but her needs may change a little. A McHenry, IL vet lists some great senior cat care tips in this article.

Beds

It may not even seem possible, but somehow your kitty will manage to sleep even more as she grows older. Senior cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Looking adorable must be really hard work! Offer your drowsy pet lots of comfy beds

Playtime

Did you know that playing with your cat is one of the best things you can do with her? Regular play sessions will benefit Fluffy both mentally and physically. Go get that laser pointer!

Diet

Proper nutrition is very important! Get your furball the best food you can afford, but don’t overindulge her with fatty treats. Follow your vet’s specific nutritional recommendations.

Senior Facilities

Older cats sometimes have trouble getting in and out of litterboxes with low walls. Get Fluffy a senior-friendly powder room. Also, make sure your kitty’s private bathroom is in a quiet, convenient location.

Grooming

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body to groom herself as she grows older. Help your feline friend out by gently brushing her.

Lighting

Just like people, kitties often experience a decline in vision as they age. Keep nightlights on for Fluffy after dark, so she can find her way around more easily.

Veterinary Care

Your cat may need to see the vet more often in her golden years, so she can be monitored for any potential health issues. At home, keep up on Fluffy’s parasite control, and watch for signs of illness. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything wrong.

Mental Stimulation

Aging kitties sometimes get a bit forgetful and confused. Fluffy may forget where her food dish is, or get lost in the hall. It isn’t uncommon for older cats to meow loudly to vocalize their distress when these things happen. Just soothe your furball as best as you can.

Love

The best thing you can do for your kitty is to make sure she feels loved, safe, and secure. Pay attention to Fluffy, and spend time with her. There’s nothing cuter than a purring senior cat!
