Fall Hazards for Pets

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but it does bring some specific hazards to our furry friends. Pet parents will want to be aware of these dangers, and take precautions to keep their furbabies healthy and safe in autumn. Read on to learn about some fall hazards for pets in this article from a Fox Lake, IL veterinarian.

Chemical Dangers

In fall, many people treat their properties with pesticides, insecticides, rodenticides, and fertilizers. Your pet could easily get these harmful chemicals on those adorable paws by walking through treated areas. Since many pets lick their paws, this exposure can make your little buddy very sick! Another thing to be careful of is antifreeze. It’s extremely toxic to pets, but unfortunately has a taste many animals find appealing. Clean up any spills right away.

Plants

Those changing leaves can be absolutely breathtaking, but autumn flora can be very dangerous to your beloved pet. Mushrooms are one thing to watch out for, as your furbaby could get very sick from eating a toxic mushroom. Get rid of wild mushrooms on your property, and don’t let Fido snack during his walks. You’ll also want to be aware that many plants that bloom in fall, such as chrysanthemums, are toxic to animals. Piles of leaves can also be dangerous, as dead vegetation can harbor mold or bacteria.

Halloween

Halloween candy can be very dangerous to your furry buddy. Chocolate, hard candies, raisins, macadamia nuts, and anything with xylitol in it are all very dangerous to pets. Keep the goodies away from Fido and Fluffy! Cats, particularly black cats, are also in danger at this time of year, so keep Kitty safe and sound indoors.

Decorations

Autumn decorations have a lovely and whimsical charm, but take care to choose items that are safe for your pet. Avoid anything with small parts or dangling threads, as these could choke or entangle your furry pal.

Heating Elements

Many of us bring out space heaters and fire up woodstoves or fireplaces in autumn. It’s much too easy for Fluffy or Fido to stick that cute tail too close to a flame! Be very careful with heating elements. Also, be sure to place candles and potpourri burners in spots that are well out of your furbaby’s reach.
