Tips for Choosing Dog Toys

October 15 2016

Does your pet go through toys more quickly than you can replace them? Toys are great for our canine friends! They can keep Fido occupied, active, and happy, and provide your furry buddy with beneficial mental stimulation. Doggy toys are definitely not one-size-fits all, however. Read on as a Fox Lake, IL vet offers some helpful tips on picking your pet’s playthings.

Size

Size is one of the most important things to consider when picking out Fido’s toys. Big dogs can easily choke on things made for smaller pups. Even tennis balls can be dangerous for large breeds, as they pose a serious choking hazard! Small dogs, on the other hand, can hurt themselves playing with things made for bigger pups. Always check the labels for size recommendations.

Material

Unfortunately, pet product safety is not always strictly monitored. We recommend avoiding items made overseas, as some places have few—if any—regulations. You don’t want to risk buying something that may contain harmful chemicals! Read the labels, and look for toys made from safe, recognizable ingredients.

Safety

Man’s Best Friend is pretty good at tearing up his toys, especially stuffed animals. Many of these cute playthings have small parts, like buttons, that dogs can choke on. Squeakers can also be problematic: some of our canine pals will try to eat them! Choose sturdy, durable toys, and don’t be afraid to modify them by removing small pieces and sewing the toy back up.

Fido’s Favorites

Keep your pet’s personality and needs in mind when choosing his toys. Does your furry buddy tend to get into mischief when he’s left alone? If so, Fido may enjoy a good puzzle toy, which will keep him busy. Puppies, on the other hand, need lots of chew toys. Ask your vet for specific advice.

DIY Toys

While you can find some great doggy toys in stores, you can also make your own. For instance, you can cut an old tee shirt into strips, and then braid the pieces together to make a cute rope toy for Fido. Another easy way to amuse your pooch is to drop a muffin tin on the floor upside down, and put some kibble pieces in the ridges. Look online for more DIY ideas.
