7 Ways To Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost

June 1 2022

Lost Pet Prevention Month is June! This may be a sad topic, but it’s an important one. As many as one in three pets are stolen or lost at some point over the course of their lives. That’s a pretty sobering statistic. While we hope all of our patients are safe and sound at home, this is one area where it pays to take some precautions. Here, a vet lists some ways to keep your pet companion from getting lost.

Keep Kitty In

While Fluffy may love ignoring you when you call her or leaving dusty pawprints on your car, she’s much safer inside. Keeping your kitty in not only reduces the chances that she’ll get lost: it also protects her from hazards like weather, cars, and other animals.

Train Fido

Fido should know basic obedience commands, such as Come, Heel, Sit, Stay, and Lay Down. This is very important, as proper training can help keep your pooch from running off if he slips out the door or if you drop his leash.

Secure Yard

Fido has quite a taste of adventure, and is not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure you have secure fencing, so your pooch can’t go under, over, or through it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

Pets that haven’t been fixed face a greater risk of being lost, as they often want to run off looking for love. If your furry pal is intact, make that appointment as soon as possible.

Use Leashes

It’s always safest to keep him leashed whenever you take him off your property, even if Fido is really well-trained. Better safe than sorry!

Lost pet reports tend to go up significantly at certain times. Two of the biggest concerns are New Years’ Eve and July 4th, when the noise of fireworks scares many pets, causing them to run in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Be extra careful at these times!

GPS Collars

This is a fairly new technology, and one we are happy to see. There are different types of these, so be sure to do some research before purchasing one. Be sure to look at reviews, of course, but also check options for subscription fees and perks.
