April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! Are you planning to bring a new feline pal into your household? If so, going to a shelter is a great way to find Fluffy. Read on as a local McHenry, IL vet discusses adopting a shelter cat.
Don’t Overlook The Unwanted Cats
Many people go for kittens, which is understandable. Not only are baby cats almost impossibly cute, there’s also an appeal to raising your furball yourself. However, older cats also have lots of charms. They’re already trained, and they are much calmer and less destructive. Senior cats often really struggle to get adopted. This is really sad, as most of them just want laps to nap in.
Do Some Kittyproofing
Before bringing Fluffy home, take time to make your home safe for her. You’ll want to address things like toxic plants, plastic bags and ties, wires and cords, and anything small or sharp. Make sure that your doors and windows close securely.
Don’t Rush Introductions
Do you have other kitties? If so, you’ll need to go slowly with introducing them. Cats can be quite territorial, and they easily get jealous of each other. Plus, first impressions are a big deal to Fluffy! Ask your vet for specific advice on this.
Make A Kitty Haven
It doesn’t take much to turn a house into an absolute heaven for Fluffy. Offer lots of kitty comforts. Beds and scratching posts are important, but you don’t have to break the bank. Most cats also love things like boxes and paper bags.
Contact The Doctor
One of the first things you’ll want to do is schedule an appointment. Chances are, your kitty will probably already be fixed. However, you’ll want to get a thorough exam right away. Fluffy will also need vaccines, microchipping, and parasite control. For detailed information on our wellness services and vaccinations, visit our vet wellness and pet vaccinations page.
Give Kitty Time
Cats are very emotional, and they can be stressed out by major changes. Some kitties will immediately make themselves at home, and hop right into your lap. Others will want to hide until they feel safe. Let your feline buddy have the time she needs to get settled. Don’t force attention on her: win her trust by offering toys, treats, and great care. Purrs from shelter cats are extra precious! If you’re looking to encourage more cuddles, read our tips in “Making Your Cat More Cuddly.”
