Your pet is an important part of your life and household. Furbabies fill our lives with love, laughter, and countless cuddles. Sadly, one in three pets will become lost at some point in their lives. Here at your local McHenry, IL veterinary clinic, we understand the stress, worry, and heartbreak that comes when a furry family member goes missing, and we truly hope that none of our clients have to experience it. To help prevent your pet from running away, especially when left alone, check out our article on 7 Pet Safety Tips for ‘Home Alone’ Dogs. However, as a precaution, we do want to offer some tips for what to do if it does happen.
Don’t Delay
With each hour that passes, the distance your pet could have covered grows larger. Don’t wait! The sooner you start looking, the better.
Start Close
Start by searching your immediate neighborhood. Check ditches, empty lots, and wooded areas, in case your beloved pet is hurt and lying just out of sight. Ask neighbors if they have seen your furry friend, and recruit helpers if you can.
Spread The Word
Social media is a great way to spread news quickly, but grass roots efforts can also pay off. Make a flyer that includes both front and side view photos of your pet, as well as information on when and where they were last seen. Ask friends and family to share the information on social media, and place it in as many local spots as possible. Many small businesses have bulletin boards where you can post flyers. Local newspapers are also a good way to get the word out.
Offer A Reward
Even small rewards can motivate people to return pets. Offering a reward can increase the chances of your furball coming home.
Contact Shelters
If your furbaby is in a shelter, you may have a very small window of time to rescue him. Some shelters will take down information, and contact you if they get an animal that matches your pet’s description. Others require that you visit in person. Check all shelters and rescues within an hour’s drive.
Microchip
Make sure your pet’s microchip records are current. Many microchip manufacturers offer assistance with missing pets. They might spread the word to local vets or helpful individuals. It won’t hurt to call and ask!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is any way we can be of assistance. As your McHenry, IL vet clinic, we are here to help! Our comprehensive veterinary services include microchipping, wellness exams, and other preventive care measures that can help keep your pet safe and healthy.
