Is Acupuncture Right for Your Pet?

August 15 2018

Did you know that acupuncture can be just as effective for pets as it is for people? This ancient practice is becoming more and more popular in the world of veterinary medicine, and with good reason: it actually has some wonderful benefits! Here, a Fox Lake, IL vet discusses acupuncture for pets.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, as you may know, originated in China, thousands of years ago. The practice uses small needles, which are inserted into specific points of the body. In Eastern medicine, the theory is that the needles manipulate the flow of energy through the body, much like the way that wires and outlets direct electricity through a house. From a more clinical standpoint, the needles are inserted into nerve centers, which has a more measurable effect. Acupuncture releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. It also improves tissue blood flow, oxygenation, and the removal of metabolic wastes and toxins, promotes healing, and helps circulation.

How Acupuncture Helps Pets

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of medical issues in our furry pal. It’s often used to help dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other bone/joint issues. It’s also sometimes used to treat gastro-intestinal problems and liver and kidney issues. This can help soothe pets’ pain, and increase their mobility. It’s really wonderful to see a dog that is stiff and sore become more mobile and active after treatments!

Treatment Sessions

Acupuncture is safe for pets in all stages of their lives. One key benefit of the treatment is that it can be repeated as often as needed. In fact, repeated treatments often bring continued improvement. The process will not interfere with any medications that your pet is taking, and does not have any known side effects. In fact, our furry patients often relax during their sessions, and sometimes even fall asleep. As for recovery time, well, a few ear scritches and a nap should do it.

Tips

Although acupuncture can be wonderful, it isn’t necessarily right for every pet. If you think that your animal companion could benefit from acupuncture treatments, ask your vet for more information. While treatment is always offered on an individual basis, there’s no harm in asking questions and getting more information.
