Celebrating World Wildlife Conservation Day

December 1 2021

Did you know that December 4th is World Wildlife Conservation Day? We of course usually focus on domestic animal companions, but as animal lovers, we also want to recognize their wild cousins. As you probably know, many wild animals face some very serious threats, such as habitat loss, climate change, trafficking, pollution, and hunting. While no one person can solve all of these issues, there are things you can do that can help. A Fox Lake, IL vet lists some key ones below.

Plant Native Flora

This one may need to wait a few months, but you can start now by ordering seeds. Planting trees, flowers and bushes that are native to this area can help support fragile ecosystems. Be sure to include lots of vibrant flowers to attract pollinators.

Feed Birds

Do you enjoy birdwatching? You may find that the more attention you pay to our feathered friends, the more rewarding this becomes. Even putting a birdfeeder in your yard can be helpful. (Just don’t put it too close to the house: you don’t want to attract vermin.) If you’re particularly interested in birds, you might also want to learn about World Migratory Bird Day on May 8th, which celebrates another important aspect of bird conservation.

Shopping Practices

There are many small things you can do to help support wildlife conservation. If you use Amazon, consider setting your bookmark to smile.amazon, and choosing a wildlife charity. When shopping, choose products that use safe, sustainable resources. This can help limit pollution, which will in turn help wildlife.

Spread The Word

A signal boost is a small thing to do, but one that can grow and spread awareness, and help foster positive change. This can be anything from sharing posts and articles to simply talking to your children about wildlife and how important it is to protect all of the Earth’s living creatures.

Volunteer

If you’re passionate about conserving wildlife, reach out to local groups and look into ways to make a more direct impact. Many groups organize cleanups. You can also get involved in things like craft fairs, bake sales, or online events, with proceeds going towards conservation.

Keep Kitty In

Did you know that cats kill billions of small animals every year? Turns out that Fluffy is a bit of a serial killer! Keep your feline pal indoors, and let her attack catnip birds, rather than real ones. To ensure your indoor cat stays healthy and active, consider consulting our vet nutrition & weight management service for personalized diet and exercise plans.

Happy Holidays! Please reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your local Fox Lake, IL animal clinic, we’re always here for you!
