Tips for Helping Your Dog and Guests Get Along

December 15 2016

The holiday season is upon us! Are you planning on having guests this year? It’s always great to reunite with friends and family members. If you have a dog, you may want to take a few simple precautions to make sure that things go smoothly between Fido and your visitors. Below, a McHenry, IL vet offers some advice on helping your pet and guests get along.

De-Fur

Before your company arrives, dust and vacuum your home thoroughly to remove fur, dander, and other allergens. Also, brush Fido daily for a week or so before your company arrives. This will trap that dead fur in a brush, before it gets stuck to everything.

Guest Room

We recommend getting a good air purifier for your guest room. If you know or suspect that your visitors have allergies, set out some tissues and perhaps some over-the-counter allergy medications. It’s also a good idea to ask your guests to keep their door shut. Your company may not want Fido napping on their bed!

Begging

We know, Fido’s begging is adorable, and it is pretty hard to resist. Begging is bad doggy manners, though, and it can make people uneasy. If your canine pal tends to stare at people while they are eating, keep him crated or in another room during meals. Also, ask your guests not to feed your pup without approval. For more detailed advice on how to address this common issue, check out our article on Fido’s Begging Habit.

Playtime

Take your furry buddy for a nice long walk before your company arrives, and indulge him in a fun, vigorous session. This will burn off Fido’s excess zoomies, so he’ll be calmer around your company.

Preparations

Give your pup a good bath, or take him to the groomer’s, before your guests arrive. That way, Fido will look—and smell—soft and clean for your company. Also, make sure your dog is current on his vaccines and parasite control products. If your four-legged friend is overdue for veterinary care, schedule an appointment now. Our vet wellness and pet vaccinations services can help ensure your dog is healthy and up-to-date on all necessary preventive care.

Greetings

If Fido sometimes says hello to people by bowling them over, put him in his crate or in a quiet room when the doorbell starts ringing. You’ll want to make sure your canine companion is comfy, so offer him lots of fun toys and perhaps a yummy treat.
