Dog Park Petiquette

May 1 2018

Does your canine pal love to go to the park? This can be a great way for Fido to get some fresh air and exercise, and also see his buddies! However, there are some definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to dog park petiquette. For general advice on park visits, you might want to check out our article on Tips For Taking Fido To The Park. In this article, a Fox Lake, IL vet offers specific tips on dog park etiquette.

Preparations

Fido should be microchipped and wearing proper ID tags. Make sure that your canine buddy is up to date on his vaccinations and parasite control products. We recommend keeping copies of your furry friend’s paperwork with you. Stash photocopies in the glove compartment of your car, so you always have them. You can also take pictures of them with your phone, or email copies to yourself.

Monitoring

Before you turn your four-legged buddy loose in the park, take a few minutes to observe the dogs that are already playing. If you notice females in heat, aggressive dogs, or pooches that are playing rough, you may want to take your pup for a walk and come back another day.

Training

Before taking Fido to the dog park, make sure he knows basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. This can help you keep him from charging up to that cute poodle, or running off.

Water

Fido can get thirsty very quickly when he is running and playing with his friends. Make sure to bring along plenty of water. You may want to get a collapsible doggy dish, or a pet water bottle with a dispenser.

Waste

Be sure to pick up after your canine companion! While many dog parks do set out baggies, it’s always a good idea to have some with you.

Food

It isn’t uncommon for people to grab lunch or a snack to enjoy while their pets are running and playing. Just be careful about bringing food with you. Try to opt for things that won’t give off a strong, enticing scent. You may find yourself surrounded by begging pooches. This also goes for treats. If you offer your furry pal a snack, do it discretely, so the other dogs won’t notice. Otherwise, you could cause a bit of a ruckus!
