Siamese Cat Day

April 1 2017

Did you know that Siamese kitties have their own day? April 6th is officially Siamese Cat Day! Read on as a McHenry, IL vet discusses these cute, lovable felines.

Appearance

These fashion-forward kitties definitely have their own sense of style. Most Siamese kitties have tan, brown, or white coats, which they accessorize with brown or black tips on their ‘points’, which are their ears, paws, noses, faces, and tails.

Relatives

Many other breeds have been developed from crossing Siamese cats with other kitties. This list of Fluffy’s close kin includes the Balinese, Bengal, Birman, and Himalayan, among others. While not directly related to the Siamese, cat enthusiasts might also be interested in learning about other unique breeds. For instance, you can Meet The Ukrainian Levkoy, a fascinating breed with its own distinctive characteristics.

History

Native to Thailand, the Siamese is one of the oldest cat breeds. The Siamese is an ancient breed, but these cute kitties did not make it to the Western World until Crystal Palace Cat Show in London in the late 19th century.

Vocalizations

One of the Siamese’s most distinctive traits is their chattiness. Whether you please or don’t please, if you adopt a Siamese, you’ll likely be hearing your kitty loudly state her opinions on, well, pretty much everything. The Siamese has a distinctive meow that sounds very much like that of a human baby. If you are looking for a talkative, opinionated pet, a Siamese may be a great option for you!

Temperament

Siamese cats are very lovable, charismatic, and affectionate, and often tend to demand attention rather than request it. In some ways, they act more like dogs than cats. For instance, it isn’t unusual for Siamese kitties to actually like water. In fact, if you have a Siamese, your pet may play with her water bowl, or even jump into the shower! (Apparently, no one told these furballs that kitties are supposed to hate getting wet.)

Sociability

Siamese cats often bond very closely to their owners, and don’t always care for being left alone. If you are adopting a Siamese, you may want to get two kitties, so Fluffy has a friend to play with while you are out.

Pampering Fluffy

If you have a Siamese cat, remember to pamper your feline pal on her special day. Fluffy may enjoy a new toy, some treats, or perhaps a piece of cat furniture!
